Shower Pumps

We recently installed a shower pump into a large family home in West Moors, Dorset. A family of 4 adults.

The client asked us what pump we would recommend and why. Now normally, we would simply install the pump we are most familiar with. However, in this instance, the location of the pump needed to be in the heart of the bedrooms, so a quiet and compact pump was essential. The home featured three full sized shower cubicles. One in the main bathroom, one in the master bedroom ensuite and the third in the guest ensuite. It was entirely possible all three showers could be used simultaneously. The client wanted all showers to provide excellent performance when all showers were in use. After much research, we settled on a 3 bar Stuart Turner Monsoon pump. Now, whilst our ‘go to’ shower pump is generally a Stuart Turner Monsoon, it is rare for us to spec the 3 bar version. To ensure the pump was as quiet as possible, we made sure the pipe work swept nicely into and out of the pump. Avoiding sharp right angles can reduces noise and vibration. We mounted the pump on an anti-vibration mat. The result was a very quiet and exceptionally powerful shower experience. I would almost say, the pump is so quiet, that it is the water flow in the pipes that can be heard rather than the pump motor itself. The client was very pleased with the whole installation. However, in hindsight, the client agrees that a 2 bar pump would likely have been a better choice.

Why would a 2.0 bar Stuart Turner Monsoon pump have been a better choice?

Firstly, it has been very rare for all three showers to be in use simultaneously, if ever. Even if they are all used, the pump is so powerful, all three showers will empty the hot water cylinder of water long before the user has finished their shower. In most cases, only one shower is in use at any one time. A 3 bar water pressure is just more than sufficient for a single shower. So in summary, whilst the 3 bar pump makes sense on paper, the reality of use suggests a 2 bar pump would have been a better choice. The overall experience will generally be better. Less stress on the system, a cheaper pump, use less water and quieter overall.
